Theatre of Tragedy was a Norwegian band that formed in 1993 and became one of the pioneers of the gothic metal genre. Their early work, particularly the albums "Theatre of Tragedy" (1995), "Velvet Darkness They Fear" (1996), and "Aégis" (1998), were influential in shaping the sound that combined heavy metal with gothic elements and contrasting vocal styles. The band was known for their use of Early Modern English in their lyrics and the vocal interplay between soprano Liv Kristine and growling vocalist Raymond István Rohonyi. Over time, Theatre of Tragedy's style evolved, incorporating elements of electronic music and moving away from their gothic metal roots. Despite this shift in style, they maintained a dedicated fan base throughout their career. The band announced their breakup in 2010 and performed their last concert on October 2nd of that year, leaving behind a legacy that influenced many artists within the gothic and symphonic metal scenes.
