Product information Stunning reissue of the fourth Bathorys album in a limited 180 gram gatefold edition. Blood Fire Death is the fourth album by Swedish band Bathory. It continues the band's transition to more epic songwriting and features some of the band's earliest Viking metal, though it is still predominantly black metal. Bathory was formed in Stockholm in 1983. Founder Quorthon, a seventeen-year-old guitarist, was joined by bassist Hanoi and drummer Vans. After various name changes (they started with Nosferatu, then Natas, Mephisto, Elizabeth Bathory and Countess Bathory), they finally settled on Bathory. The first record deal came later that year, when Quorthon managed to get boss Tyfon Grammofon's approval to record two tracks for the Scandinavian Metal Attack compilation. The tracks he recorded gained unexpected attention from fans [note: soon afterwards Tyfon Grammofon contacted Quorthon and asked him to record a full-length album. Although Venom's Black Metal, released in 1982, was the first record on which the term appeared, it was Bathory's early albums, which featured satanic lyrics, low-fi production, and an inhuman vocal style, that defined the genre. Many fans speculated that Venom influenced Bathory; however, Quorthon stated in a 1985 interview with Kick Ass magazine that he had not heard of Venom until after the release of Bathory's first album. He also expressed dislike for many of the influential and popular heavy metal bands of the time, such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. He also stated that the band's early work was influenced primarily by Black Sabbath, Motorhead and punk rock. Bathory's self-titled debut album and subsequent albums The Return and Under the Sign of the Black Mark are now considered major influences on Norwegian bands that expanded the musical progression and popularity of black metal in the early 1990s.
