It was recorded over several weeks during the lockout and Nick Cave describes it as "a brutal but beautiful record set in a shared catastrophe". Although the two have composed and recorded many soundtracks together, and Ellis is also a longtime member of The Bad Seeds, Carnage is actually the first LP they've officially recorded as a duo. The unique creative chemistry between Cave and Ellis stems from their long history together as colleagues and solo artists. With Carnage, they present the next chapter of their musical adventure: an album that was meant to be created, so to speak, by accident during the long global lull in the months of the pandemic. The different moods and also the restlessness of these recordings reflect existential uncertainty, but at the same time, moments of calm, moments of meditative self-reflection appear again and again. The bottom line is that this is an album made in and for these changing times, punctuated by moments of concentrated beauty. Recordings that defiantly express their unwavering confidence.
