On the compilation "Gumba Fire", the reissue specialists at Soundway focused on a musical genre that was very popular among the black population of South Africa in the 1980s: bubblegum. In a way, this genre emerged from the ruins of the declining disco boom, comparable to the electro boogie that was developing in the US at the same time. Like machine funk, bubblegum was based on a stripped-down lo-fi sound whose main elements were synths, keyboards and electronic beats. The only difference was that Bubblegum also contained the soul and harmony vocal elements that the South African musical landscape is famous for. For "Gumba Fire", Miles Cleret (Soundway) and DJ Okapi (Afrosynth Records) selected more than a dozen tracks that have found a permanent place in DJ sets over the years and have lost none of their groove to this day. The compilation thus sufficiently lives up to its title, which is a paraphrase of "hot party". Those who have been following Soundway's releases for a while will recognize in "Gumba Fire" the counterpart to the sampler "Doing It In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco In 1980s Nigeria" introduced in 2016.
