The album reached number 36 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was recorded at Roundhouse Studios in London in early 1977 and produced by Gerry Bron. In a retrospective review, AllMusic critic Eduardo Rivadavia awarded the album three stars out of five, stating, "Innocent Victim is a transitional album for Uriah Heep and therefore not as consistent as some of their earlier or later efforts. However, it boasts some great songs, including the title track 'Stealin' and the epic 'Lady in Black'".
