A great album, both in terms of ideas, lyrics and music. On his third solo album, Roger Waters, former bassist, singer, songwriter and co-founder of Pink Floyd, takes the listener on a journey into his inner self, exploring how mass media, particularly television, affects human society.The title of this complex concept album is taken from a book by writer Neil Postman, who also explores the dangers and awareness of how mass media shapes our lives. In the title track, aliens land on Earth after the demise of humanity and find only skeletons gathered around televisions. The alien anthropologists use all sorts of tests to find out the cause of these "sad deaths." Their conclusion? "This species has been bludgeoned to death. = "This species is sick to death." The idea is illustrated by the cover photo of a gorilla watching TV - "just flipping through the channels to see if anything interests it," says Waters. Like many of us these days. Q magazine describes Amused To Death as sounding more like a Pink Floyd album than Waters' other solo efforts to date. It's a brother to "The Wall", perhaps even a distant relative of "Dark Side Of The Moon", which should please fans of those albums.
