Mike Rosenberg, better known by his stage name Passenger, has always had two sides to him: on the one hand, an incredible radio sound, reflected in his international hit "Let Her Go" and the UK album Young As The Morning, Old As The Sea (2016), and on the other, his much more introverted work as a singer-songwriter, as seen on Whispers II (2015) and The Boy Who Cried Wolf (2017). The new album Runaway again shows Passenger's more epic side: the melodies are an unforgettable experience, the choruses simply gigantic. These are songs made for radio. "Some people consider pop a dirty word," says Rosenberg, "but pop just means the melody is catchy. All my favorite songs ever written are catchy." The new album, Rosenberg's tenth in eleven years, was recorded in the UK and Australia with his co-producer Chris Vallejo, but carries a distinctly American flavour. Some of the lyrics refer to very specific places, such as Detroit and Yellowstone National Park. "My dad's American," Rosenberg explains, "and when I was a kid we went there regularly every other summer. I always loved it, and I think I was really seduced by the country a little bit. It was also an incredible culture shock for me after coming from England." On a purely musical level, there are also many references to American music on Runaway, such as the early work of Ryan Adams. You can hear lap steel guitars, a bit of mandolin and a bit of banjo, all of which guitarist Benjamin Edgar contributed to. Rosenberg is also supported on the album by bassist Rob Calder, drummer Peter Marin and keyboardist Jon Hansen. According to Rosenberg, his new songs are best developed against the backdrop of the American landscape. Therefore, instead of shooting regular music videos, he embarked on a three-week trip across the U.S. with director Jarrad Seng, during which various videos were made.
