The album was produced by Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin and was recorded in Los Angeles, California. Minutes to Midnight was the band's first album to feature drummer Rob Bourdon and turntablist Joe Hahn. The album title Minutes to Midnight refers to the hours of the doomsday. The clock is a symbol representing the threat of global nuclear war and is displayed on the wall of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists office in Chicago, Illinois. Minutes to Midnight has received mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised the album for its departure from the band's earlier nu-metal sound, while others criticized it for being too experimental. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one in the United States and Canada and selling over 625,000 copies in its first week. It was also the band's first album to go platinum in the United States. The album's lead single, "What I've Done", was released on April 2, 2007.
