Zum Inhalt dea Albums In April 2008 we were lucky enough to release the American version of the debut album Antidotes by the British quintet Foals from Oxford on Sub Pop Records. Antidotes was a special album. Two years after that impressive showing, we decided that instead of twisting Antidotes' guitars into ever more elaborate patterns, Total Life Forever was the sound of a band settling down and exploring the breakdown of old protocols. On the new album, Foals shed their sound and turn themselves inside out in search of that invisible human thing. The result is an album that is as emotionally compelling as Antidotes was physically. While that album constantly reinforced its own presence by filling the air with screams and polyrhythm, the tracks on Total Life Forever, like the disarming opener "Blue Blood," "2 Trees" and the stunning "Black Gold," are more than happy to leave gaps for the listener to explore with the ear and mind's eye. Written largely in the basement of their Oxford headquarters ("The House of Supreme Mathematics") and recorded in Gothenburg with former Clor man Luke Smith, Total Life Forever finds Foals singing rather than screaming, both emotionally and functionally. The band's soul-searching reveals new antidotes that are found in endless interior spaces rather than violently carved into the air - Total Life Forever is the work of artists rather than craftsmen. It's a triumph that they've managed to remain a band of progress and propulsion while exploring that vast, dark space that lies within them -â€"that gap between the ribs where "nature, god or whatever you want to call it" enters.
