Herbie Hancock is a highly influential jazz pianist and composer whose career spans over six decades. Born on April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, Hancock was a child prodigy who performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11. He began his jazz career in the early 1960s as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, where he contributed to the pioneering of modal jazz. Hancock's own recording career as a bandleader started with his debut album "Takin' Off" in 1962, which included the hit "Watermelon Man."
