The Long Ryders are an American alternative country and Paisley Underground band that emerged in the early 1980s. Formed by Sid Griffin, Stephen McCarthy, Tom Stevens, and Greg Sowders, the band became known for their blend of punk rock energy with traditional country and folk influences, a style that would later be recognized as a precursor to the alt-country movement. They gained critical acclaim with their 1985 album "State Of Our Union," which featured a mix of politically charged lyrics and roots rock sounds. Their follow-up album, "Two Fisted Tales," released in 1987, continued to showcase their distinctive style and songwriting prowess. Despite their growing influence, the band disbanded in 1987 but left behind a legacy that included influencing future generations of Americana artists. They reunited several times over the years for tours and released a comprehensive box set titled "Final Wild Songs" in 2016, which collected their classic tracks along with rare and live recordings. The Long Ryders' contribution to the evolution of country-rock has cemented their status as pioneers within the genre.
