The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American musical project and band led by frontman Anton Newcombe. Formed in San Francisco in 1990, the group's music spans multiple genres including psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and indie rock. The band's name is a portmanteau of The Rolling Stones' guitarist Brian Jones and the infamous Jonestown mass suicide. Over the years, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been known for its prolific output and has released numerous albums, with "Methodrone" being their debut studio album released in 1995. The album showcased their early shoegaze and psychedelic sound. Throughout their career, they have experienced numerous lineup changes with Newcombe being the only constant member, and they have gained a reputation for their tumultuous live performances and dedication to an authentic representation of 1960s psychedelic rock. Despite not achieving mainstream success, they have maintained a dedicated fan base and have influenced many contemporary artists within the neo-psychedelia genre.
