Reinhard Keiser

Reinhard Keiser

Baroque German Composer and Opera Pioneer

Reinhard Keiser (1674–1739) was a prolific German opera composer based in Hamburg during the Baroque period. He was a leading figure in the world of German opera before the emergence of Handel, with whom he later worked. Keiser composed over a hundred operas, and while many have been lost to time, his reputation as a master of the genre remains. His works were known for their strong characterizations and effective use of orchestral color. Keiser served as the director of the Hamburg Opera at the Gänsemarkt for many years, where he was instrumental in developing the city's musical life. His operas "Croesus" and "Pomona" are examples of his work that have been occasionally revived and recorded in modern times, showcasing his skillful blend of German and Italian operatic traditions. "Der Blutige Und Sterbende Jesus" is an example of his sacred music, which also includes passions and cantatas, demonstrating his versatility as a composer beyond the realm of opera.
