Marcel Cellier

Swiss Music Producer and Ethnomusicologist

Marcel Cellier (1925–2013) was a Swiss organist, musicologist, and producer who gained international recognition for his work in promoting Eastern European folk music, particularly from Bulgaria and Romania. He was not only a talented musician but also an avid collector and curator of traditional music from these regions. Cellier's most notable contribution to world music was his discovery and promotion of the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir, which he introduced to Western audiences through the album series "Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares." The first volume of this series won a Grammy Award in 1989 for Best Traditional Folk Recording, bringing the haunting beauty of Bulgarian polyphonic singing to global attention.
