Johnny Otis

Pioneering Rhythm and Blues Musician and Bandleader

Johnny Otis was a pivotal figure in the development of American R&B and rock and roll. Born Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes on December 28, 1921, he was a Greek-American artist who became known as the "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues." Otis wore many hats throughout his career: he was a bandleader, talent scout, composer, singer, drummer, and record producer. He is perhaps best known for his discovery of numerous influential musicians, including Etta James, Jackie Wilson, and Big Mama Thornton—the latter of whom recorded the original version of "Hound Dog," which later became a hit for Elvis Presley.
