Twentieth-Century French Classical Composer and Pianist

Jean Françaix (1912–1997) was a French neoclassical composer, pianist, and orchestrator, known for his prolific output and vibrant style. Françaix's compositions were often characterized by their lightness, humor, and wit. He began composing at a very young age and was encouraged by his family; his father was a musicologist, composer, and pianist, and his mother was a teacher of singing. Françaix studied at the Paris Conservatory with Nadia Boulanger, who was an influential teacher to many 20th-century composers.
