Engelbert Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey on May 2, 1936, is a British pop singer who gained international fame during the 1960s and 1970s with his rich, smooth voice and charismatic stage presence. He adopted his stage name from the 19th-century German composer of the same name. Humperdinck's career took off after he released his single "Release Me" in 1967, which went on to top the charts in several countries and prevented The Beatles from having another number one hit at that time. His style and repertoire have traditionally been in the easy listening, ballad genre with romantic themes.
