Autopsy is an influential American death metal band that was formed in 1987 in San Francisco, California. The band was founded by Chris Reifert after he left the pioneering death metal group Death. Autopsy quickly established itself as a prominent act in the underground metal scene with its raw and brutal sound. Their debut album, "Severed Survival," released in 1989, is considered a classic in the death metal genre and is known for its gruesome cover art and heavy, doom-laden riffs. Following up with "Mental Funeral" in 1991, Autopsy further cemented their legacy by incorporating more varied tempos and a doom metal influence, which set them apart from their peers.
