The Frenchman Woodkid chooses ever new artistic forms and channels to realise his visions and has become a secret icon in the last decade: He is an exceptional audiovisual artist whose work always bears his signature, even as it takes on new forms with each collaboration and release. We already knew that Woodkid is someone who manages to build a bridge between the old and the new world. And that's not just because the young Frenchman has already collaborated with some heavyweights of the international pop world: Lana Del Rey and Drake have been involved, as have Rihanna and Pharrell. Even more crucial and extraordinary is that he is one of the few artists who work in a truly interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary way, leaving behind the classic genre and generic boundaries because he is simply interested and fascinated by so many forms of expression and art. Woodkid would never think to stop his curiosity and pursue any of these channels. Examples? Contemporary dance: for example, his spectacular collaboration with the famous dancer and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Fashion: an extremely fruitful collaboration with one of the greatest fashion designers of all time, Nicolas Ghesquière, long-time artistic director of Louis Vuitton. And then, of course, the medium of film: Woodkid contributed to the music for the film Desierto by Jonás Cuarón, after his compositions had already been heard in films by Steven Spielberg and Xavier Dolan. Photography and visual arts: a collaboration with fellow artist JR, with whom he still does projects for the New York City Ballet... Add to this his interest in gastronomic curiosities and you get a rough idea of what the French enjoy. As a musician, all he needed was one album - The Golden Age - to make a clear sonic and visual statement, and he gained countless fans and an incredible amount of praise for his project. And now, after a good five years of maturation, focus and experimentation, he's taking it a step further in his own way, his "way of making worlds", to use Nelson Goodman's term: they are worlds of solidarity - and yet clearly just his worlds. His new LP S16 is about scales, about scales: from the infinitely large to the infinitely small, about the balance of power between man and machine, also about the collective and individual responsibility of thinking a new world when the old one is so close to collapse. S16 was recorded at Abbey Road studios in London, as well as in Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles and Iceland. Among others, the Suginami Junior Chorus from Tokyo was involved - although here it was only a suitable intro for a very specific passage. While the title refers to the chemical element with the symbol S and the atomic number 16 - sulphur - S16 refers to all material: What are our cells made of, what is our heart made of? Where exactly is the boundary between reality and fiction? On the one hand, sulfur plays a central role for all living organisms, but on the other hand, it tends to flare up. Like a searing pain that music can still inflame - only to soothe it like an embrace..... Although his unmistakable voice is still as warm and so strangely soothing, Woodkid this time relies on symphonic surfaces: he creates an entire universe that nevertheless stands on its own, sounding unconditionally like intimacy. His new album is a moving, deeply human whole that reflects our times and all that is happening around us... A quote by Victor Hugo from Les Rayons et les Ombres sums it up very well: 'The human mind has three keys that open everything: Number, letter, note. Knowledge, thinking, dreaming. That is everything." And so begins the next chapter.
Album couvre tous les genres Musique électronique, Trip Hop et Tribal. Limited Monolith Box Edition.
