Impulse Records was a major venue for selling music that embraced the searching and political engagement of the sixties. Founded in 1961, the Impulse label became an integral part of the speed and scope of the times as jazz entered the era of Black Power, Afrocentrism and spiritual expansion. Balancing tradition and transition, it bridged the golden age of jazz, a brief period from the late 1950s to the 1970s that saw players from every era of jazz - from Louis Armstrong to Albert Ayler - living and working as legends passed on to a new generation of energetic artists. From swing and bebop to free and Afrofuturist music, Impulse considered all of its musicians to be innovators, even revolutionaries. The performances on Impulse Records: Music, Message and the Moment draw their power from a wide range of styles and sounds and from a narrow focus on a historical moment when the promise of change was in the air and the message of racial equality was in the music.
