Just a year ago, the original lineup of the band with singer David Lee Roth and "A Different Kind Of Truth" celebrated a studio comeback that surprised with its quality. But of course it could never be as beautiful as it was then - from "You Really Got Me" to "Jump". Just as beautiful as on the first six Van Halen albums, which between 1978 and 1984 set new benchmarks for hard rock with the fun factor - countless imitationstors struggled with guitarist Eddie Van Halen's incredible riffs, licks and tricks, and unfortunately took David Lee Roth's often ironic macho show for a blank coin. The quartet, rounded out by Eddie's brother Alex on drums and bassist Michael Anthony, became L.A.'s most popular local band by 1974, playing clubs and bars, and it wasn't until a demo financed by Gene Simmons (Kiss) that Warner was signed. Van Halen's uncompromising and unapologetic sound, Larger Than Life, became immortal on their 1978 debut album, the originalsongs like "Runnin' With The Devil" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," as well as in a spectacular cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me." Eddie Van Halen played unheard of things on guitar (until now), and yet songs never became a mere vehicle for his string skills. With "Spanish Fly" he was able to shine acoustically on the following album "Van Halen II", which still saves every party with the songs "Dance The Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls". On "Woman And Children First" Van Halen rocked "Romeo Delight" harder than ever, but tracks like "Fools" and "Loss Of Control" also showed a new songwriting maturity beyond mere fun. The band continued in this vein in 1981 with "Fair Warning" - even the notoriously good-natured David Lee Roth was infected by the music's unpleasant atmosphere. "Where Have All The Good Times Gone?" Van Halen asked, again loosely based on Ray Davies, at the very beginning of the following album, "Diver Down," which gave the answer with more tailor-made covers like "Pretty Woman" (Roy Orbison) and the Motown classic "Dancing In The Street". In addition, Roth showed great old vaudeville form on "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)". Van Halen have been flirting with the synth here and there since the "Woman And Children First" album. But it wasn't until the grandiose riff intro to the megahit "Jump" that really cemented the instrument in the band's sound on "1984" and also allowed them to make a definitive transition to a very large pop audience. The fact that Van Halen never compromised their rock 'n' roll roots, but were also on top of things on other tracks like "Panama" and "Hot For Teacher" makes the album a perfect statement from the band. From today's perspective, it seems almost logical that David Lee Roth has gone solo (for now): What else could come after this? The box contains the albums Van Halen (1978) Van Halen II (1979) Women and Children First (1980) Fair Warning (1981) Diver Down (1982) 1984 (1984) Review ,,With six LPs released between 1978 and 1984, Van Halen achieved worldwide fame. It was that shows the now-released collector's box THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978-1984, in which they collected these six CDs as mini-LP replicas." (Good Times, April/May 2013) , "All the albums from this great era in an affordable cover" (Rolling Stone, April 2013).
