The year 1970 was a peak period for the Grateful Dead. After the incredible success of Workingman's Dead, the band returned in the fall with the equally stunning American Beauty. These classics not only introduced songs that would become an important part of the band's concert repertoire for decades to come, but also opened the door to the world of the Grateful Dead for generations of Dead Heads. In 2020, American Beauty will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The three-disc set includes the original album with remastered audio and a previously unreleased concert recorded on February 18, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The show was mixed from Jeffrey Norman's 16-track analog tapes at Bob Weir's TRI studio in Marin County and mastered by Grammy® Award-winning engineer David Glasser. The 12-inch Picure Disc contains the original album with remastered sound. Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart recorded American Beauty in August and September 1970 at Wally Heider's San Francisco studio with producer Stephen Quinn Barnard. When they entered the studio, Workingman's Dead was still on the charts and on the rise. Such a rapid succession of studio albums was unprecedented for the band and was never repeated. Equally shocking was the level of craftsmanship on new songs like Friend Of The Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Truckin' and Ripple. To this day it is still considered one of the best albums of all time. American Beauty (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) features the band's previously unreleased live performance on February 18, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre, one of the most sought-after archival recordings in the Dead vault. That night the Dead introduced a number of new songs on stage, five in all: Wharf Rat, Playing In The Band, Bertha, Greatest Story Ever Told and Loser. Fans were also treated to several stalwarts from the last decade, including St. Stephen and the Dark Star-inspired jam that led to Wharf Rat and back to Dark Star. Keyboardist Ned Lagin (who played piano in American Beauty's Candyman) joined the band for the show.
