Straight Outta Compton is the debut studio album by American hip hop group N.W.A, released on August 8, 1988 on Ruthless Records. It was the first gangsta rap album to be released. The album is known for its explicit lyrics and for its influence on the gangsta rap genre. Straight Outta Compton was recorded in 1988 at Eazy-E's home studio in Compton. It was produced by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, with Eazy-E as executive producer. The album features guest appearances by Ice Cube, MC Ren and Eazy-E himself. Straight Outta Compton was well received by music critics, who praised the group's unapologetic lyrics and aggressive approach. The album was also commercially successful, debuting at number 38 on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually reaching number 2. The album was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Straight Outta Compton is credited with popularizing gangsta rap, and its explicit lyrics have been blamed for the subsequent decline in the genre's popularity.
