The Menahan Street Band is made up of musicians from the bands Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (Dave Guy, Homer Steinweiss, Fernando Velez, Bosco Mann), El Michels Affair (Leon Michels, Toby Pazner), Antibalas (Nick Movshon, Aaron Johnson), and Budos Band (Mike Deller, Daniel Fodder), put together by musician and producer Thomas Brenneck (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings). The Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Amy Winehouse) to perform in the bedroom of his home on Menahan St. in Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood. With influences that transcend the funk/soul/Afrobeat architecture of their other projects into the more ethereal realms of Curtis Mayfield and Mulatu Astatke, Menahan Street Band creates a unique new instrumental soul sound that is as raw as it is lush. Their debut album Make the Road by Walking will be released on Dunham Records, Brenneck's new imprint Daptone Records, a joint venture dedicated to bringing the Menahan Street sound out of Brenneck's bedroom and into the world. The album features eerily bizarre arrangements involving vibes, horns, piano, organ, percussion and even a strange shimmering sound that Brenneck creates by tuning and strumming the strings of his guitar on the wrong side of a bridge. But it's not the textures themselves that make the new sound of Menahan Street so exciting, but rather the way these sounds are incorporated into the heavy rhythms and bold melodies of the songs.The album's title was inspired by both the eponymous community center underneath Brenneck's apartment and the natural rhythm that keeps this project moving forward. "Make the Road by Walking" was sampled by Brooklyn native Jay-Z shortly after its release as Dunham's debut 45 rpm single for his hit song from the movie American Gangster, "Roc Boys (and the Winner is...)" (which Rolling Stone magazine later named the #1 single of 2007). Make the Road by Walking is a soulful exploration of the possibilities of instrumental music by a talented group of young musicians; an original, personal and uncompromising creation that embodies the sound of a select group of musicians in one distinct place at one specific moment. "This album is kind of a window into our world on Menahan Street," says Brenneck. "In a way, we're just the unofficial house band of the street."
