In compiling this album after Marvin Gaye's death, it became apparent that parts of this material could be culled for a complete album. Although the eight tracks on this album were recorded at three very different stages of Marvin Gaye's musical career, most of the songs focus on his Motown period in the early 1970s. Both "Sanctified Lady" and "Masochistic Beauty" are rhythmic, drum machine, keyboard, bass and guitar oriented boogie funk songs of a more complex type. The title track, which closes the album, was intended for Sammy Davis Jr. when he joined Motown. His orchestral ballad style and Marvin's vocal arrangement can be heard throughout the song.
