With 1998's "Pilgrim," Eric Clapton ended his nearly four-year creative hiatus since the release of the blues tribute "From the Cradle." But wait: wasn't there something there? Sure: the '96 hit "Change The World" and the TDF project, backed by none other than Simon Climie (ex-Climie & Fisher, whose only real hit was 1988's "Love Changes Everything") and "Slowhand" himself. The renewed collaboration yielded ambient pop with a guitar set, and Climie not only acted as keyboardist but - along with Clapton - also as producer, which was especially evident in the rhythm area. The tempo is often set by subtle dance beats ("Pilgrim", "One Chance", even a Celtic whistle on "Broken Hearted") and the songs are often adorned with all sorts of electronic flourishes. Most of them are classically composed pop songs, so there should be plenty of singles candidates. The first choice was the worldwide hit "My Father's Eyes," for which Clapton won a Grammy in the "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" category. The Boss is accompanied by longtime bandmates like Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar) and drummer Steve Gadd, and notable guests like Paul Carrack (organ), Joe Sample (piano) and bassist Nathan East, who play with precision and discipline.
