Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald was an icon of jazz singing. Born in 1917, the American was often called the first lady of song. In this live recording of a concert on 1 February 1974 at the Sporthalle in Cologne, the artist, famous for her "scat" singing, is in absolutely superb form. And her accompaniment was among the best that the jazz swing era had to offer: Fitzgerald's longtime collaborator Tommy Flanagan on piano, the virtuoso Joe Pass on guitar, Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Later they would be joined by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on tenor saxophone and veteran Roy Eldrige on trumpet. You'll hear jazz classics like "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing," "These Foolish Things" and "Now's The Time."
