The album was honored as "Album of the Year" at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards in 1998. Review by M. Schlüter in Stereo Play 11/97: "The backing band, classically simple in its composition of bass and drums, keyboards (mostly organ) and electric rhythm guitar, provides an extremely cohesive and effective sound that doesn't change much on the album. In addition, Lanois has found an excellent setting for Dylan's voice, which sounds more magnificent than ever in its raspy depth."
