Wilhelm Peterson-Berger

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger

Swedish Romantic Composer and Critic

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger was a Swedish composer and music critic who lived from 1867 to 1942. He is best known for his five symphonies and his piano suite "Frösöblomster," which contains lyrical pieces inspired by the natural beauty of the island of Frösön in Lake Storsjön, Jämtland. Peterson-Berger's music often reflects his love for Swedish folk melodies and nature, and he was part of the national romantic movement in Swedish music. In addition to composing, he had a significant influence on Swedish musical life through his work as a critic for the newspaper Dagens Nyheter, where he was known for his sharp pen and strong opinions. His critical writings often sparked controversy due to his conservative views on music and resistance to modernist trends. Despite this, his compositions have remained a part of the Swedish musical canon, with works such as "Frösöblomster" being particularly cherished.
