System Tandem was a Czechoslovakian jazz duo consisting of Jiří Stivín, a flautist and saxophonist known for his versatility in various music genres, and guitarist Rudolf Dašek. The duo was active during the 1970s and 1980s, a period marked by a vibrant jazz scene despite the political challenges of the time in Eastern Europe. Jiří Stivín, born on November 23, 1942, in Prague, was not only a prominent figure in Czech jazz but also gained international recognition for his work. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and the Royal Academy of Music in London and has been influential in blending classical music with jazz improvisation.
