Stephen Rice

Stephen Rice

Stephen Rice is a British conductor, musicologist, and singer known for his expertise in Renaissance music. He is the director of The Brabant Ensemble, which he founded in 1998. The ensemble specializes in lesser-known choral works from the sixteenth century, particularly those from the Franco-Flemish School. Under Rice's direction, The Brabant Ensemble has gained recognition for its clear and expressive performances, contributing to the revival of interest in Renaissance polyphony. They have recorded extensively for the Hyperion label, receiving critical acclaim for their albums which often include world premiere recordings of works by composers such as Crecquillon, Manchicourt, and Phinot. Stephen Rice's scholarly approach to performance practice and his dedication to unearthing and interpreting early music have made significant contributions to the field of early choral music.
