Sophie Watillon

Baroque Cellist

Sophie Watillon (1965–2005) was a distinguished Belgian viola da gamba player known for her expertise in Baroque music. She studied at the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and The Hague, where she honed her skills on the viola da gamba, an instrument prominent in Renaissance and Baroque music. Watillon had a successful career as a soloist and as part of ensembles, collaborating with various early music groups such as La Fenice and Ricercar Consort. Her performances were well-received for their expressiveness and technical proficiency. Throughout her career, she contributed to numerous recordings that showcased her talent and dedication to the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. Watillon's untimely death at the age of 39 was a significant loss to the early music community.
