He was one of the artists signed to the Black Jazz Records label, which was known for its promotion of African-American jazz musicians and its focus on spiritual jazz, a subgenre that often incorporated elements of funk, soul, and Afrocentric political expression. Johnson's style was rooted in hard bop and post-bop, and he was recognized for his expressive playing and his ability to blend traditional jazz elements with more contemporary sounds.
