Ramsey Lewis is an acclaimed American jazz pianist and composer whose career spans over six decades. Born on May 27, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of four. He formed the Ramsey Lewis Trio in 1956 with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Redd Holt, which became one of the most successful jazz groups of the 1960s. Lewis is known for his crossover appeal, achieving success on the pop charts with hits like "The 'In' Crowd," "Hang On Sloopy," and "Wade in the Water." Throughout his prolific career, he has recorded over 80 albums and has received numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards. His work encompasses a variety of styles, from jazz to pop to classical, showcasing his versatility as a musician. Lewis has also been a prominent radio personality, hosting the program "Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis," which further solidified his status as a jazz luminary.
