Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers before recruiting Dave Grohl in 1990. Nirvana's early work on the album "Bleach" (1989) was influenced by heavy metal and punk rock, but they found unexpected mainstream success with "Nevermind" (1991), which featured the hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit." This album marked a dramatic shift in the music industry, bringing alternative rock and grunge to a wide audience and signaling the decline of the dominance of hair metal.
