Josef Matthias Hauer

Josef Matthias Hauer

Austrian Composer and Music Theorist

Josef Matthias Hauer was an Austrian composer and music theorist, born on March 19, 1883, in Wiener Neustadt and died on September 22, 1959, in Vienna. He is primarily known for developing a method of composing with twelve tones, which he called "Zwölftontechnik," independently of and simultaneously with Arnold Schoenberg, who is more widely credited with the invention of twelve-tone serialism. Hauer's approach to twelve-tone composition was distinct from Schoenberg's, as he focused on the idea of tropes or unordered pitch sets as the basis for his music.
