Dschinghis Khan is a German pop band that was created in 1979 to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest with their song "Dschinghis Khan," which became their signature hit. Named after the Mongolian conqueror Genghis Khan, the group was known for their catchy disco-influenced pop songs and flamboyant stage performances, often featuring costumes and dance routines inspired by Mongolian historical themes. The original lineup consisted of Steve Bender, Wolfgang Heichel, Henriette Strobel, Leslie Mándoki, Louis Potgieter, and Edina Pop. Although they did not win Eurovision, finishing in fourth place, Dschinghis Khan gained popularity both in Germany and internationally. They released several albums throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, with hits like "Moskau," which remains popular to this day, especially in Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe. The band's success waned in the late '80s, but they have experienced various revivals and lineup changes over the years.
