Ethnomusicologist and World Music Recordist

David Lewiston was a British musician, music collector, and ethnomusicologist, born on May 11, 1929. He is best known for his extensive field recordings of traditional music from cultures around the world. Lewiston's career as a recording artist began in the 1960s when he traveled to Bali and was captivated by the gamelan music he heard there. This experience inspired him to record the music of other cultures. Over the decades, he traveled to countries in Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, capturing the sounds of indigenous music often at risk of being lost to time.
