Dan Penn, born Wallace Daniel Pennington on November 16, 1941, is an American singer, songwriter, and producer who is widely regarded for his significant contributions to the soul music genre, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. Hailing from Vernon, Alabama, Penn's career began in the Muscle Shoals music scene where he penned numerous hits for various artists. He is best known for writing or co-writing soul classics such as "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" for Aretha Franklin and "The Dark End of the Street," which has been covered by many artists.
