Argentine Tango Composer and Bandoneón Virtuoso

Astor Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player whose innovative approach to the traditional tango revolutionized the genre with his introduction of elements from jazz and classical music. Born on March 11, 1921, in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Piazzolla spent much of his childhood in New York City, where he was exposed to a variety of musical influences. He studied with the famed Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera and later with the legendary French pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, who encouraged him to embrace his tango roots.
