It is the band's second album with bassist Jaco Pastorius, but "Heavy Weather" marks his first appearance as a full band member, while "Black Market" features him on only two tracks. The opening track of "Heavy Weather", "Birdland", was a commercial success, which may not have been typical for instrumental music. "Heavy Weather" was released at a time when the jazz rock/fusion movement was running out of breath, and shows that despite everything, there was still creative life in the genre.
