With their eponymous 1978 debut, Van Halen also rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined the possibilities of the electric guitar and developed a lightning-fast technique with a series of self-taught two-handed licks, hammer-ons, pull-offs and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. He was extremely inventive and brilliant, surpassed only by singer David Lee Roth, who took the role of metal singer almost to the level of performance art. Roth, unlike Eddie, was not blessed with great technique, but he had a talent for showmanship that came as much from parlor artists like Robert Plant. Together they made Van Halen the most popular American rock and roll band of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and laid the foundation for the hard rock and heavy metal of the 1980s.
