Product information Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela release their new collaborative album "Rejoice" on World Circuit. The album will be the first posthumous release for Masekela, who passed away in 2018. Allen, the Nigerian master drummer widely credited as the co-founder of Afrobeat (and longtime member of alt-rock supergroup The Good The Bad & The Queen), and Masekela, the legendary South African trumpeter, first met in the 1970s through their close relationship with Fela Kuti and had been talking about an album together for decades. When their UK tour dates came together in 2010, the moment was opportune and producer Nick Gold seized the opportunity to record their reunion. The unfinished recordings, consisting of all the original tracks by the pair, lay in the archives until Masekel's death in 2018. With renewed determination, Tony Allen and Nick Gold, with the blessing and participation of Hugh's estate, unearthed the original tapes and in the summer of 2019 completed the recording of the album in the same London studio where the original sessions took place. Allen and Masekela are accompanied on the record by a new generation of respected jazz musicians including Tom Herbert (Acoustic Ladyland / The Invisible), Joe Armon-Jones (Ezra Collective), Mutale Chashi (Kokoroko) and Steve Williamson. 'Rejoice' can be seen as the long-awaited fusion of two mighty African musical rivers - a union of two free-flowing souls for whom boundaries, whether physical or stylistic, are a thing to be traversed or ignored entirely. According to Allen, the album is "a kind of South African-Nigerian swing-jazz stew" - a description borne out by a cursory listen to the parallel harmonies of horn hook and loping percussion in "Agbada Bougou", the driving percussive swing and brass chatter in "Coconut Jam", or the skittering snare drums in "Obama Shuffle Blues". In addition to the excellent flugelhorn blowing, Masekela was also inspired by the spontaneous vocals in a trio of tracks, both in the colloquial Zulu language, as in the seductively relaxed opening track "Robbers, Thugs and Muggers", with the ear-pleasing chant of "O Galajani" - the urban community slang for all such rogues - or, as in the jazzy and Afrobeat-tinged tribute to Fela Kuti, "Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be The Same)", in English. "The feeling was really good," Allen recalls of the first session. "We all thought we'd follow it up with reworkings of the drums, keys, voices and so on. It was an exciting idea." Unfortunately, scheduling those studio dates proved problematic, though Masekela and Allen regularly bumped into each other at European festivals. "Every time we met, he would ask me, 'What's going on with this project? I had to say, 'I don't know!' Eventually I asked Nick if I could listen to the recordings, and that got the project going again. Unfortunately, Hugh died soon after." Allen claims to be very happy with the finished album, and remains phlegmatic about his lengthy pregnancy. "Ten years is a long time from the beginning to the end [of making] an album, but my own philosophy is that everything eventually comes out at the right time, for whatever reason..." In addition to his unique drumming style, Allen also contributed a quiet, but celebratory, semi-loud commentary to the first single, "We've Landed." "The song is dedicated to the youth of today," Tony explains, "the lyrics speak to people at seventeen, eighteen, nineteen who are slowly growing up, figuring out who they are, and realizing that it's their generation's turn to wake up!"
