After the worldwide commercial success of "Elephant" and its worthy successor "Get Behind Me Satan", Jack and Meg White temporarily put their band on ice. Jack, meanwhile, was fulfilling his musical ambitions in the all-male band Raconteurs, Meg was a model and enjoying life. Now, just in time for their tenth anniversary, The White Stripes return from their creative hiatus with a new album. "Icky Thump" shows that our duo has once again evolved, yet stayed true to their musical and stylistic maxims. It has become a richly produced, loud sounding, modern album, but one that reveals its roots in American folk at every opportunity. Even with the punchy first riffs of the opener, it's clear to the listener that they are now embarking on a journey that is as typical of the White Stripes as it is extravagant. The title track already claims the straightforward tradition of hits like "Seven Nation Army" and, like it, will cause a sensation for more than a summer.Between the highly original, explosive blues-rock titles, the almost country-rock song, the dark surf sound, the slide guitarepics, and musical gems full of redneck wisdom, the White Stripes come for the first time with new instruments in their pantheon: Bagpipes and trumpet, which can be found on the album's next single, "Conquest." "Conquest," a Patti Page hit in the '50s, has undergone a realWhite Stripes right and impresses with hard, bassy guitar riffs combined with mariachi trumpets on a fuzzy flamenco carpet.
