While Pornography (1982) tended to illuminate the darker side of existence in murky and stuffy soundscapes, The Top, released two years later, was characterized by a previously unheard of eclecticism. Here Smith experimented for the first time with crystal-clear pop melodies (especially in the case of the hit The Caterpillar), but also with exotic instrumentation and unusual combinations. Most notable tracks include Shake The Dog, Give It To Me and the title track. The bonus disc contains 17 more tracks that appear on the CD for the first time: demos, home recordings and live recordings.
