Despite all the fears that thematic concept albums are not contemporary, Alan Parsons' egomaniacal projects have always found a wide audience. Of course, you can listen to the perfectly stylized music of the man behind the mixing desk for its programmatic content and delve into esoteric sonic depths. But you don't have to, because Parsons' creamy blend of ballads and rock numbers tickles the auditory nerves even without lyrics and themes.Already the album "The Turn Of A Friendly Card" contains two of arguably the best tracks from Parsons' kitchen of ideas, the harmonically tuned "Time" and the gently swinging "Games People Play," which opens with an empirical fanfare. That the instrumental tracks are also mostly in the all-rock camp is not surprising, as the music is far more likely to strum high-energy Britrock notes than to hatch bombastic "sonic soufflés" (Rolling Stone.) In any case, the title delivers what it promises. In fact, the sales figures for this record have shown that this "friend card" is the trump card in Parsons' musical game.
