The little secret of Sufjan Stevens' famous "Illinois" album is that it was originally conceived as a double album that culminated in a musical collage of nearly 50 songs. But then Sufjan looked at this evolving, unwieldy monumental work and turned on his common sense: the project was cut in half. As 2005 drew to a close, Sufjan returned to the remaining songs on his eight-track album and assembled 21 tracks from the remaining material; some songs were in finished form, others were just outlines. Most of them required extensive rearrangements, new arrangements or vocals, which were done in late 2005 or the following January.
