Sting with a classic album? That must be a misunderstanding, you must be thinking. But those who know Sting - one of the world's most famous pop artists - more intimately know of his love of classical music, which he has been doing for many years. And now the little sensation is perfect, the first classical album of John Dowland's songs is being released by Deutsche Grammophon. Together with Bosnian lutenist Edin Karamazov, who also accompanied Andreas Scholl, Sting presents the album "Songs From The Labyrinth". The pop singer came across Dowland's songs in the early 1980s, when his guitarist Dominic Miller gave him a lute. Sting subsequently discovered the Elizabethan musician as one of the first singer-songwriters in the history of English music, whose songbooks were incredibly successful across Europe. "John Dowland's songs have haunted me in a subtle way for over twenty years," explains Sting. "For me, they're pop songs written at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, and that's how I understand them." In addition to the songs, Sting quotes excerpts from Dowland's letters on the CD. According to Sting, "Songs From The Labyrinth" thus conveys to listeners "an understanding of Dowland himself... and the musical soundtrack of his life".
