"Creatures Of An Hour", Still Corners' debut, shines thanks to Tessa Murray's delicate vocals and the atmospheric, cinematic influences of composer Greg Hughes. Still Corners also poke fun at the youthful vibe of French no wave and the restlessness of the Italian horror genre. From the projections (directed by band member Leon Dufficy) that characterise their live performances, to the free-floating glamour of 'Creatures Of An Hour'. Recorded at Hughes' own studio in Greenwich, the devil is in the detail. Between the whispered intimacy and the emotional range of filmmaker Ennio Morricone, Hughes writes deceptively simple songs that lodge in the consciousness like half-forgotten dreams. The first single, "Cuckoo," shines in its simplicity: a single drumbeat, a ghostly guitar and a distant organ set the scene for Murray's soprano asking, "I'd like to read your mind / Can you read mine?" Hughes, meanwhile, is content to keep Still Corners' musical secrets a mystery because he doesn't like to explain the songs: "It ruins the mystery." Reviewers around the world, however, have been keen to praise the beauty of Still Corners' pop. Grab a bag of popcorn and get comfortable: this is just the first act for Still Corners.
