The album was preceded by the release of the pilot single "Life of the Party" on June 12, 2014. The album includes the singles "Something Big", "Stitches" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" featuring Camila Cabello. Mendes co-wrote all the songs on the album. Handwritten was met with positive reviews from music critics who praised Mendes' songwriting and singing abilities. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 119,000 units in its first week. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it a platinum record for shipping one million copies in the United States. As of November 2017, the album has sold 1.5 million copies in the United States.
